How to Prepare Your Home for a Lifestyle In-Home Photos Session

Lifestyle in-home photo session in Portland is about documenting your family right where your life is actually happening. Your home already holds meaning. It’s where routines unfold, where kids feel most at ease, and where the quiet in between moments happen naturally. Those familiar spaces allow your family to relax, connect, and be fully yourselves, which is what makes in-home sessions feel so genuine and heartfelt.

One of the most common worries parents share before a lifestyle in-home session is about their home. Many families tell me they’re stressed about clutter, unfinished nurseries, or spaces that don’t feel “photo ready.” Let me gently reassure you, your home does not need to look perfect.

Focus on Light, Not Perfection

When preparing for your session, the biggest thing I look for is light. Natural window light is what gives lifestyle images their soft, timeless feel. Bedrooms, living rooms, and nurseries often work beautifully. I will also walk around the house and find spots that work well. Every house is different, and I love capturing the uniqueness of the house and decorations.

I’ll guide you to the best light in your home, but most common areas are:

  • Bedrooms
  • The living room
  • A nursery

You don’t need to clean the entire house. We only use a few areas, and I help you choose them.

Simple Prep Tips

A little light tidying can help. Decluttering is the key. Moving laundry baskets out of view, putting unwanted items such as random boxes or dirty dishes away, or smoothing bedding near windows is great place to start. There’s no need for deep cleaning as the photos won’t show the dust on your tv stand. I’ll guide you through everything, and I might move things around as we move between rooms. I promise to gently step around the things that don’t matter.

Things you can keep in mind:

  • Declutter table and kitchen counter
  • Open blinds and curtains for more light
  • Tidy nightstands and floors near windows
  • Keep neutral bedding or blankets nearby

That’s it. No deep cleaning required.

What to Have Ready for Newborn Session

During your session, you’ll be feeding your baby, holding them close, rocking, swaying, and simply being together. These moments don’t require a perfect backdrop. They require presence, comfort, and trust—and that’s what makes in-home newborn sessions so special.

  • A window with good natural light
  • A comfortable spot for feeding and cuddling
  • A relaxed mindset

Some of the most meaningful images happen during everyday moments like feeding your baby, rocking them to sleep, siblings climbing onto the bed.

If it’s a family session, you’ll simply do what you already do together—snuggling on the couch, reading a book, playing on the floor, or gathering everyone onto the bed for a few quiet moments. These photos don’t depend on a perfect backdrop. They’re built on presence, comfort, and the way your family naturally connects in your own space.

All we really need is a window with good natural light, a comfortable area where your family can settle in together, and a relaxed mindset. I’ll guide you gently throughout the session, so there’s no pressure to perform or pose.

Some of the most meaningful images come from everyday moments like kids climbing onto the bed, laughter in between activities, or those quiet pauses when everyone ends up close without even trying.
